Hobbs explains that the "painting represents a familiar drama that plays out on late summer mornings in the Delaware Water Gap. As morning dawns, a layer of clouds lingers along the river. But as the sun rises, this line of mist rises up between the mountains and burns off. This view is from the Pennsylvania side looking east (to New Jersey). In August, low water levels expose fascinating formations of river rocks. On clear mornings, the rising sun highlights the mist and rocks providing dramatic contrasts."
